CALGARY - Royal Dutch Shell says it's moving ahead with its Carmon Creek oilsands project in northern Alberta.
The steam-driven project in the Peace River region is expected to produce 80,000 barrels of oil per day.
Shell says it will need some 1,000 workers during peak construction periods.
Carmon Creek will include cogeneration facilities that will produce 630 megawatts of electricity, about 500 megawatts of which Shell will sell to the northwest Alberta power grid.
Shell also intends to recycle water produced with the oil once the project is up and running, virtually eliminating its need for fresh water to generate steam.
Shell made its announcement amid news that Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) and its partners would be going ahead with their 180,000-barrel-per-day Fort Hills oilsands mine north of Fort McMurray, Alta.
Meanwhile, the Fort Hills oilsands mine is a go after years of delay, Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) announced Wednesday.
Canada's largest energy company, says the project's total cost — shared between Suncor and partners Total E&P and Teck Resources Ltd. — is now $13.5 billion.
