Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Toronto police officer Glenn Weddell acquitted of G20 assault on Dorian Barton

A judge has acquitted a Toronto police constable of assaulting a bystander at a G20 summit protest three years ago, preferring his fuzzy memory of events to an unreliable Crown witness.

Ontario Superior Court Justice M. Gregory Ellies found Glenn Weddell not guilty of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon for the injuries inflicted on Dorian Barton during the June 26, 2010 demonstration that took place a few hundred metres south of the Ontario legislature.

Toronto G20 trial: witness to alleged police assault is lying, defence tells judge

The only witness to testify he saw Const. Glenn Weddell beat a bystander at a Toronto G20 protest is a liar with a grudge against the force, a defence lawyer argues.

Lawyer Peter Brauti alleged Wednesday that Andrew Wallace, the hospital worker who photographed Dorian Barton on a Queen’s Park lawn in June 2010 after he was injured, purposely deleted a digital photo that would help acquit the accused officer by showing he was not committing an assault.

Trial opens for police officer charged in alleged G20 assault

A Toronto man testified he was given no warning before he was beaten and arrested by police while taking photographs of mounted officers at Queen’s Park at a G20 demonstration three years ago.

“As I was taking pictures, I was hit with a very significant impact on my right side,” Dorian Barton said Monday at the opening of the assault trial of Toronto police Const. Glenn Weddell — the first criminal trial of any officer charged in controversial policing of the 2010 Toronto G20 summit.
