Far-right thugs, football hooligans blamed for violence at London march

London’s Metropolitan Police said that physical violence by far-right thugs and football hooligans on the city’s streets Saturday was more dangerous than the far-larger pro-Palestinian demonstration that was largely peaceful.

An estimated 300,000 people took to London’s streets on Saturday — as protesters did across other major European cities such as Paris and Brussels — to call for a cease-fire in Israel’s bombing campaign on Gaza. The London march was between Hyde Park and the U.S. Embassy.

Update: ESPN is reporting that Jameis Winston will not be charged in connection to an alleged sexual assault last December.

In November, TMZ reported that a former Florida State University student had accused the school's quarterback, Jameis Winston, of rape nearly a year ago. The accuser's lawyer says that after she came forward the Tallahassee police tried to dissuade her from pressing charges, warning her that the city is "a big football town" that might not treat her warmly if she leveled these allegations. Indeed, since her charges became public, some Seminoles fans have floated conspiracy theories that a rival school or Heisman Trophy contender may have put the accuser up to it. Prosecutors, for their part, will hold a press conference on Thursday afternoon to announce whether they'll go forward with the case.

Rob Ford: Mayor cancels meeting with Toronto Catholic board to discuss his coaching future

Mayor Rob Ford cancelled a Thursday meeting crucial to his fate as coach of the Don Bosco Eagles high school football team.

Ford’s office called the Toronto Catholic District School Board Wednesday to postpone the meeting with education director Bruce Rodrigues that is to be the final step in the board’s review of Ford’s coaching future.

The school board is examining a Sun interview in which Ford made disparaging comments about the school community that have been called inaccurate by the board, parent council members, teachers and even one of Ford’s assistant coaches. The mayor asserted that Don Bosco players come from “broken homes” and would be dead or in jail if not for football.

Rob Ford aide’s unsolicited offer to school: $10,000 to start new football team

One of Mayor Rob Ford ’s staffers emailed a Catholic high school on Tuesday with an unsolicited proposal to start a football team with “up to $10,000” from Ford’s foundation.

The use of taxpayer-paid city employees for non-city purposes is a likely violation of council’s code of conduct. In fact, Ford was found by the integrity commissioner to have violated the code in 2010 for what appears to be an identical issue: using his staff to assist with his foundation’s work.

An Alabama high school coach is under investigation by the school district this week after apparently making controversial statements about gays and the first lady in front of students, the Times Daily reports.

In a tape leaked to school officials, Lauderdale County High School coach Bob Grisham allegedly blames "fat butt Michelle Obama" for the school's low-calorie lunches and says "what [queers] do is wrong and an abomination against God."

A series of anti-gay remarks made by San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver cast the Super Bowl-bound team in a negative light just days ahead of the NFL championship game.

Though Culliver has since apologized for the controversial statements, the backlash seems unlikely to dissipate now that a new wrinkle has emerged. The 49ers' linebacker Ahmad Brooks and nose tackle Isaac Sopoaga, both of whom participated in the team's widely-praised "It Gets Better" video last summer, have denied ever producing the clip.

Penn State probe: Paterno, school failed to protect children victimized by Sandusky

The most senior officials at Penn State University failed for more than a decade to take any steps to protect the children victimized by Jerry Sandusky, the longtime lieutenant to football coach Joe Paterno, according to an independent investigation of the sexual abuse scandal that rocked the university last fall.

“Our most saddening and sobering finding is the total disregard for the safety and welfare of Sandusky’s child victims,” Louis J. Freeh, a former federal judge and FBI director who oversaw the investigation, said in a statement Thursday. “The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized.”
