Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

GOP Senator Goes All In On ‘Nutball’ Jan. 6 Conspiracy Theories

WASHINGTON ― Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) over the weekend promoted false conspiracy theories about the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, after House Republicans released hours of raw footage from that day.

Lee said he couldn’t wait to ask FBI Director Chris Wray about an image of a man who was convicted of storming the Capitol and entering the office of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calf.). The image was shared by another Jan. 6 skeptic who suggested the man was an undercover federal agent posing as a supporter of Donald Trump.

Marjorie Taylor Greene claims Democrats failed to defend House from Capitol rioters

In a new book, the extremist Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene claims no Democrats stayed in the House chamber on January 6 to help defend it against rioters sent by Donald Trump to block the certification of Joe Biden’s election win – a claim one Democrat who did stay labeled “patently false”.

Greene’s book, MTG, will be published next week. The Guardian obtained a copy.

Trump Was ‘Not Going To Leave’ The White House, Lawyer Testifies In Georgia Case

A former attorney for Donald Trump told prosecutors in Georgia that a senior White House official insisted to her that the then-president had no plans to leave office “under any circumstances” despite losing the 2020 election and multiple legal challenges to try to remain in power.

Jenna Ellis, a key figure in Trump’s effort to remain in power, made the remarks in an interview with investigators in Fulton County after pleading guilty to a lesser charge in the state’s indictment of Trump and 18 other co-conspirators. District Attorney Fani Willis charged the group with more than a dozen felonies, alleging participants engaged in a sweeping conspiracy to try to overturn the state’s 2020 presidential election results.

Federico Guillermo Klein was convicted on 12 counts in July, including six that charged him with assaulting, resisting or impeding police officers, after a bench trial before U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden. His co-defendent, Steven Cappuccio, was also convicted for actions related to the insurrection.

Liz Cheney calls new House speaker ‘dangerous’ for January 6 role

The new Republican speaker of the US House, Mike Johnson, is “dangerous” due to his role in Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election, the former Wyoming Republican congresswoman and January 6 committee vice-chair Liz Cheney said.

“He was acting in ways that he knew to be wrong,” Cheney told Politics Is Everything, a podcast from the University of Virginia Center for Politics. “And I think that the country unfortunately will come to see the measure of his character.”

Extremist Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) ranted against Army Gen. Mark Milley in a Sunday newsletter that included multiple homophobic digs.

Gosar claimed that National Guard assistance at the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack was “delayed” by Milley, the outgoing chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He accused Milley of scheming with then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to undermine Donald Trump.

Prosecutors seek 30-year sentences for Proud Boys leaders in Jan. 6 case

Prosecutors are seeking 33-year prison sentences for former Proud Boys chair Enrique Tarrio and his ally Joe Biggs, who they say aimed to foment a revolution on Jan. 6 to keep former President Donald Trump in power.

The proposed jail sentences would nearly double the lengthiest Jan. 6 sentence handed down to date — 18 years for Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes — a decision prosecutors say reflects the pivotal role that Proud Boys leaders played in stoking and exacerbating the violence at the Capitol that day.
