Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Jim Jordan, Who's Running For Speaker, Played A Key Role In Trump's 2020 Election Plot

WASHINGTON ― Staunch conservative Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is in the spotlight after launching a bid for the speaker’s gavel this week, a race that is sure to provide even more drama and chaos than the unprecedented ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

But one critical aspect of Jordan’s history that has been omitted by most Beltway publications is the prominent role he played in spreading lies about the 2020 election and rallying supporters to contest the results. The extraordinary effort led by former President Donald Trump, who has endorsed Jordan’s bid for speaker, led to the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Trump Asks For Jan. 6 Dismissal Because Coup Attempt Was Part Of His Official Duties

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump is asking a federal judge to dismiss criminal charges against him based on his actions leading up to his Jan. 6, 2021, coup attempt because, as president, that coup attempt should be considered part of his presidential duties.

Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and John Lauro, in Thursday’s 52-page filing to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, attempted to minimize Trump’s actions leading up to the violent assault on the Capitol that day and that, regardless, the law allowed Trump to act based on his belief that the election had been stolen from him.

Jurors Will Remain Secret In Trump’s Georgia Trial Amid Safety Concerns, Judge Rules

The identities of any jurors in former President Donald Trump’s election interference case in Georgia will be kept secret until the trial ends, a judge ruled Monday.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, who is overseeing the sweeping racketeering case against Trump and his 18 co-defendants, issued the order amid concerns about the safety of prospective jurors.

Donald Trump Finds A Way To Blame Nancy Pelosi For Jan. 6 Insurrection

Donald Trump offered up a strange scapegoat for the Jan. 6 insurrection in a new interview.

The former president accused former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) of allowing mobs of violent Trump supporters to overtake the U.S. Capitol by allegedly turning down his offer to activate the National Guard.

Thousands of people descended on Capitol Hill to try and stop the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory on Jan. 6, 2021, following Trump’s repeated lies about a stolen election.

Special Counsel Asks Judge To Make Trump Shut Up About The Jan. 6 Coup Attempt Case

WASHINGTON — Special counsel Jack Smith is asking the federal judge presiding over Donald Trump’s Jan. 6 case to stop the former president from making inflammatory statements that he said are endangering witnesses and will make finding a fair jury difficult.

“The defendant has repeatedly and widely disseminated public statements attacking the citizens of the District of Columbia, the court, prosecutors, and prospective witnesses,” Smith wrote in a Friday filing to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan. “The defendant knows that when he publicly attacks individuals and institutions, he inspires others to perpetrate threats and harassment against his targets.”

Trump asks judge overseeing Jan. 6 prosecution to step aside

Former President Donald Trump is asking the judge assigned to his federal prosecution for seeking to overturn the 2020 election results to step aside because of her past comments about his responsibility for the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol.

In a motion filed Monday afternoon, Trump’s attorneys said U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan’s comments about Trump during sentencing hearings for two Capitol riot defendants indicated she had already concluded that Trump is responsible for crimes related to the violence that took place that day.

Trump Seeks To Remove Tough Jan. 6 Sentencer From Election Subversion Case

Donald Trump filed a request Monday for Judge Tanya Chutkan to recuse herself from his election obstruction case, claiming she’s already “prejudged” his liability in the matter.

Trump, who’s known for drawing out his legal battles with complicated pretrial litigation, made the request with Chutkan herself, who’s overseen a number of trials against rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and has handed down some of their toughest sentences.

Proud Boys Leader Enrique Tarrio Sentenced To 22 Years For Role In Jan. 6 Attack

Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, the former chairman of the violent neo-fascist gang the Proud Boys, was sentenced to 22 years in prison for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack.

U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly handed down the sentence in a District of Columbia courtroom Tuesday, the longest sentence yet for a Capitol attacker. His sentence also included 36 months of supervised release. The Justice Department had sought 33 years for 39-year-old Tarrio for the pivotal role he played in orchestrating the violence on Jan. 6 that left more than 100 police officers injured.

Given the opportunity to speak before his sentencing, Tarrio’s voice cracked and he wiped away tears as he told the court he had “failed” his family, according to reporters in the courtroom.

Proud Boys Ethan Nordean, Dominic Pezzola Sentenced For Their Roles In Capitol Riot

A federal judge sentenced two more high-ranking Proud Boys to prison on Friday over the far-right street gang’s outsize role in the planning and execution of the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Dominic Pezzola, who breached the Capitol by smashing a window with a stolen police riot shield, was sentenced to 10 years behind bars in a D.C. District Court, four months after he was found guilty on obstruction and other charges related to the attack. Ethan Nordean, the gang’s most notorious bruiser ― known for numerous violent assaults at political rallies in the Donald Trump era ― was sentenced to 18 years in a second hearing Friday afternoon.

Trump Campaign Official Urged Cops To Hang Themselves During Jan. 6 Riot: Repor

A man who is now an official for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign was caught on video urging police to kill themselves near the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection, NBC News reported Thursday.

Dylan Quattrucci, the deputy state director of Trump’s campaign in New Hampshire, made the obscenity-laced rant after Trump loyalists stormed the building to disrupt a congressional session to certify Joe Biden’s winning Electoral College count for the presidency.

Proud Boys Joe Biggs, Zachary Rehl Sentenced For Jan. 6 Plot

Two leaders of the Proud Boys street gang were each sentenced Thursday to more than a decade in prison for their role in the planning and execution of the violent plot to overturn the 2020 election in favor of Donald Trump on Jan. 6, 2021.

Joseph Biggs, an Army veteran and former correspondent for Alex Jones’ Infowars, was sentenced to 17 years in prison by U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly in Washington on Thursday. In a separate hearing later that day, Zachary Rehl, former head of the Philadelphia chapter of the Proud Boys, was sentenced to 15 years by Kelly.
