Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

GOP Lawmaker Goes To Town On Matt Gaetz And His Allies In Snark-Filled Letter

Republican infighting showed no sign of abating over the weekend as Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.) issued a blistering letter to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and seven others in the conference who voted to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

The sarcastic missive, shared online by several congressional reporters, was in response to a Friday letter from Gaetz and six of the seven others to their colleagues.

Matt Gaetz Is Already Complaining About The House's New Interim Speaker

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) is already griping about the temporary new speaker of the House after inciting months of GOP infighting that led to the ouster of Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry is “moving in the wrong direction,” Gaetz said Tuesday. (Watch the video below.)

Eight breakaway Republicans, led by Gaetz, joined House Democrats in voting to dismiss McCarthy from the speakership earlier in the day. McHenry, a GOP representative from North Carolina, was announced as the fill-in.

'Wake Up, Dude': GOP Lawmaker Puts 'Charlatan' Matt Gaetz On Blast

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) is trying to boot House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from his leadership post over his deal with Democrats to prevent a government shutdown and claims that McCarthy cut a “secret side deal” with President Joe Biden on aid for Ukraine.

But at least one member of his own conference isn’t having it.

Gaming out Matt Gaetz’s bid to oust Kevin McCarthy

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has a big decision to make.

In the run-up to preventing a government shutdown, any questions about what the Democrats would do in the event of a vote to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker were easily batted aside as too theoretical to entertain.

“We haven’t given any thought to how to handle a hypothetical motion to vacate, because we are entirely focused on making sure that we avoid this extreme MAGA Republican shutdown,” Jeffries said last week.

Rep. Matt Gaetz Says He Plans To Oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said he plans to try to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy after the California Republican worked with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown on Saturday.

“Speaker McCarthy made an agreement with House conservatives in January and since then he’s been in brazen, repeated material breach of that agreement,” Gaetz told Jake Tapper on “State of the Union” on Sunday. “This agreement that he made with Democrats to really blow past a lot of the spending guardrails we set up is a last straw.”

What does Matt Gaetz really want?

What is Matt Gaetz‘s endgame: spending cuts, a political boost, or revenge?

It’s the question reverberating on Capitol Hill after the simmering feud between the Florida conservative and Speaker Kevin McCarthy flared up again Thursday morning in a closed-door meeting, with one lawmaker telling Gaetz to “fuck off” for leveling unproven accusations against the speaker. Gaetz has threatened to force a vote on booting McCarthy for weeks, publicly called him “pathetic” and accused him of lying multiple times.

Cassidy Hutchinson Has Brutally Honest Response To Matt Gaetz Dating Claim

Former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson fired back at Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) on Monday night after the lawmaker said the two once dated.

Gaetz made the claim in response to accusations of uncomfortable behavior in a new book from Hutchinson, who served in Donald Trump’s White House as an aide to then-chief of staff Mark Meadows.

Matt Gaetz Says Kevin McCarthy Has ‘No Real Intention’ To Impeach Biden

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) slammed House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Wednesday, saying his colleague was “never” going to impeach President Joe Biden and accusing the Republican leader of gaslighting members of his party.

“He’s throwing impeachment out like an ill-cast lure with no real intention to follow through,” Gaetz said of the speaker in an interview with MSNBC’s Ari Melber. “If you were really serious, you would subpoena Hunter Biden, get answers. They’re not serious. And that’s why you see this failure theater in the absence of real accountability.”

CNN's Abby Phillip Shuts Down Matt Gaetz Twice In A Minute, And It's Double The Fun

CNN host Abby Phillip sharply reminded Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) that Republicans still do not have evidence of any illegal activity by President Joe Biden ― and then she did it again. (Watch the video below.)

The far-right lawmaker appeared on the news network Tuesday after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) ordered an impeachment inquiry into the president for alleged influence peddling.

Matt Gaetz Wants to Make the Pentagon Answer for Training Coup Leaders

In response to a spate of coups by U.S.-trained military personnel in West Africa and the greater Sahel, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., has authored an amendment to the 2024 defense spending bill to collect information on trainees who overthrow their governments. It would require the Pentagon for the first time to inform Congress about U.S.-mentored mutineers, Gaetz told The Intercept in an exclusive interview.

Matt Gaetz Says Biden Impeachment A ‘Platform’ To Tarnish President Before 2024

WASHINGTON ― Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) this week described impeaching President Joe Biden as less an opportunity to remove Biden from office than a performance for the American people.

Gaetz said that even if the House impeaches Biden, there’s little chance the Democratic-controlled Senate would convict and remove the president from office.
