Former Vice President Mike Pence dismissed former President Donald Trump’s argument that the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade contributed to the GOP’s disappointing performance in last year’s midterm elections.

“The former president actually suggested that we lost elections in the midterms because we overturned Roe v. Wade, I don’t believe that for a second,” Pence told Newsmax’s Rob Schmitt on Thursday. “I think when you stand on the right to life and you stand with principle and compassion and demonstrate a willingness to put our arms not just around the unborn, but around newborns, around women in crisis pregnancies we can continue to win hearts and minds.”

Mike Pence on Wednesday implored Republican voters to remember and heed their onetime hero, Ronald Reagan, and said that the party should not be based on the “personal grievances and performative outrage” of and for his former boss, Donald Trump.

“The truth is, the Republican Party did not begin on a golden escalator in 2015,” the former vice president said in a speech at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire, which will hold the first-in-the-nation presidential primary in just five months. “We have come to a Republican time for choosing.”

Pence Criticized Over Call for “Expedited” Death Penalty for Mass Shooters

On Sunday, former Vice President Mike Pence — who is also running for the GOP nomination for the 2024 presidential election — reacted to a shooting over the weekend in Jacksonville, Florida, by suggesting that mass shooters should be subjected to an “expedited” death penalty process.

“Justice delayed is justice denied,” Pence said on CBS News’s “Face the Nation” program, “and I’m calling for an expedited federal death penalty for anyone engaged in a mass shooting like took place in Jacksonville.”

What happens when you shut down health centers that provide HIV testing and ban programs that encourage drug users not to share needles during a spike in opioid use? In rural Indiana, the result was a surge in HIV infections. More than 80 people have tested positive for HIV in Scott County since mid-December, with most cases linked to intravenous use of Opana, a prescription painkiller.

The warning signs were there: Four years ago the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised of the rapid spread of Hepatitis C—which often accompanies HIV—among young drug users in Indiana, many of whom shared needles and other injection equipment. Indiana has the lowest per capita spending on public health of any state, while Scott County “has high rates of poverty and despair,” wrote Shane Avery, a local family physician. “Add to this a high rate of uninsured, low rates of completing a high school education, and insufficient access to public health services such as testing for sexually transmitted infections and mental services,” and you get conditions ripe for an addiction-fueled epidemic. The only clinic to offer HIV testing in the county, run by Planned Parenthood, closed in 2013, after state legislators pushed through a series of ideologically driven funding cuts.
