Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Tanya Tagaq Talks Missing And Murdered Aboriginal Woman, PETA In CBC National Interview

When Tanya Tagaq won the 2014 Polaris Prize a week ago, Tagaq made international headlines with two words she uttered during her acceptance speech: F--- PETA."
Unfortunately, the ensuing uproar — including PETA's response that the Inuk throat-singer should "read more" — meant that too little attention was paid to the list of 1,200 names of missing and murdered aboriginal women which scrolled past throughout her mesmerizing Sept. 22 performance in Toronto .

Why transatlantic free trade is a mistake for Canada

The United States and European Union have taken the free trade plunge.

President Obama announced in February that he will start talks with the EU on a transatlantic trade, investment, and regulatory pact. Last week, the European Commission sent a draft secret mandate to member states on how far they're willing to go to clinch it. And the usual business lobbies have already begun to celebrate what they hope to be an important (for them) leap forward for corporate globalization.

The Mexican government is allegedly seeking a spot in the transatlantic talks with speculation Canada may join. But for all three NAFTA countries the pact would be a mistake, as Canadians are learning too late.

Canada, EU in final push for trade deal; latest investment chapter shows blatant pro-investor bias

Postmedia reported last week that the Conservative government may be "only weeks away" from completing a "comprehensive" economic and trade agreement (CETA) with the European Union. The article confirms what we knew already about negotiating sessions in Brussels this month (they will happen this week), and suggests that the toughest issues will be dealt with at the ministerial level, possibly in early February. A meeting in Ottawa between International Trade Minister Ed Fast and EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht will likely coincide with a European delegation to Washington, D.C. for the delayed release of a "high level working group" report advocating for a "comprehensive" EU-U.S. free trade agreement.

PETA Protest Ottawa: Demonstrators Strip Down On Parliament Hill

Tourists visiting Parliament Hill Tuesday were taken by surprise when PETA demonstrators arrived stripped down to floral pasties, thongs and blue paint.

The nine women, dressed to represent the Earth, were there to protest the Conservatives' omnibus budget bill and to encourage Canadians to go vegan.
