Rick Mercer: Online Voting Needs To Be Considered By Conservatives

Canadians can bank, pay their taxes, and even find a potential spouse online.

They just can't vote that way.

And the fact that the Harper government would seek to reform Canada's election laws without seriously discussing online voting doesn't make any sense to CBC comedian Rick Mercer.

Stephen Harper will resign.

He will go on his own, he will not be pushed. He will, in an elegant statement, say the decision was personal and that he wishes to spend time with his family and future fellow board members of Encana. An important chapter in Canada’s political history will come to a close. Canadians will never see his like again; his rock piano will fall silent. A terrific leadership race will follow. All eyes will be on Jason Kenney, Peter MacKay, Rona Ambrose, Lisa Raitt, Michael Chong and Jim Prentice.

Justice Minister Peter MacKay was quick to slam Justin Trudeau Thursday after the Liberal leader admitted to HuffPost Canada that he smoked marijuana since becoming an MP in 2008.

While Prime Minister Stephen Harper would say only that Trudeau's actions "speak for themselves," MacKay issued a stern statement denouncing what he said was as a "profound lack of judgment" from the Liberal leader.

Rick Mercer isn't a big fan of Senator Mike Duffy, but his feeling toward the portly P.E.I. 'resident' pale in comparison to those he reserves for Stephen Harper.

On Tuesday night, Mercer argued Canadians should be focusing their anger about the behaviour of senators on the prime minister who appointed them.

Rick Mercer has delivered another robocalls rant and this time he wants action.

The host of the "Rick Mercer Report" is calling for the Governor General to appoint a Royal Commission to investigate the widening election scandal.

Mercer says there is no hope of the cabinet calling a judicial inquiry to investigate their own party, because "That's like asking Don Cherry to donate his brain to science. It's not going to happen."

While Mercer says listening to the PM's parliamentary secretary Dean Del Mastro play the blame game makes him want to punch himself in the face, it's the prospect of all the people who believe voting is useless being proved right that really scares him.

So far, the only investigation into the fraudulent election robocalls is from Elections Canada. And results from that probe aren't expected any time soon.

Media attention is already slowing down, but action from the GG would undoubtedly bring the story back to the top of the national debate. Your move David Johnston.
