Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Nevada’s Largest Paper Used To Support Marijuana Legalization. Then Sheldon Adelson Bought It.

Last summer, the Las Vegas Review-Journal published an editorial proclaiming that the paper’s editorial page “has long supporting the decriminalizing, regulating and taxing the sale of currently illegal drugs,” including marijuana. It was on record as supporting an effort to legalize marijuana in the state that will go before voters this November, and as recently as late last year called for all presidential candidates to champion “removing marijuana from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act.”

I watched Hillary Clinton’s forces swipe Nevada: This is what the media’s not telling you

It probably wasn’t the best time for me to go to Vegas. My beloved father had just died the week before, and I was feeling hazy and vulnerable, prone to weeping at the slightest provocation. Grief made me feel like I had no skin and no brain; grief had turned me into a cloud, and I was in that floaty state when I got on the plane with my husband—a state delegate headed to the Nevada Democratic Convention—and our six-year-old son. I wasn’t sure what would happen once we got to Vegas, whether all the lights and bells would hammer me back into my body, or whether I would drift even further away from myself, hover like the cigarette smoke over the casino floor.

The Nevada Caucus Was A Nightmare

Hillary Clinton won Saturday’s Nevada caucus, but even those working on her behalf think the process voters had to endure to make their voices heard was nightmarish.

“We were completely overwhelmed, we had like 500 people at our caucus site,” Clinton campaign precinct captain Esther Gulli told ThinkProgress. “There were no instruction. It was total chaos. I saw people give up and leave because they had to go to work and it was taking so long. The fact that they do a caucus on a day most people here are working is really bad.”

Incoming Nevada Speaker Said Democrats Have ‘Master-Slave’ Relationship With ‘Simple Minded Darkies’

Nevada Assemblyman Ira Hansen (R), who the assembly’s Republican caucus selected as their choice to be its next speaker earlier this month, has a long history of racist, sexist and homophobic statements chronicled in a long list published by the Reno News Review. Among other things, as part of a broader statement of support for school vouchers, Hansen claimed that “[t]he relationship of Negroes and Democrats is truly a master-slave relationship, with the benevolent master knowing what’s best for his simple minded darkies.” Indeed, according to the News Review, Hansen keeps a Confederate battle flag on his wall, which he says that he flies “proudly in honor and in memory of a great cause and my brave ancestors who fought for that cause.” He also “tends to use the term ‘Negro’ and often does not capitalize it.”

Nevada Rancher Warns Land Dispute With BLM 'Could Turn Into' Next Waco

Carol Bundy, the wife of a Nevada rancher locked in a tense standoff with federal rangers, warns the ongoing dispute could escalate to the point of a confrontation similar to those at Ruby Ridge and Waco.

"If you saw the artillery and their presence -- the intimidation they are trying to put on us -- it could turn into that," Bundy told The Huffington Post.

U.S. Press Once Again Declines to Call White Terrorism in Kansas, Nevada, White Terrorism

My Top Ten differences between White Terrorists and Others,  judging by the Facebook shares, must be among the more popular pieces I have ever written.  It keeps being proven correct by American journalism every day.

I get hot under the collar thinking about all the effort the US government is expending to monitor who we call and where we are when we do it–in the hundreds of millions!– and about all the surveillance of innocent American citizens of Muslim faith and of mosques, when the American fascists receive much less focus.  If a group is armed and announces its purpose is to spread hate of another group, wouldn’t that warrant some surveillance?  By surveiling us all, precious person power is being wasted.

Lucy Flores, Nevada Legislator, Receives Threats After Admitting She Had An Abortion

A state lawmaker in Nevada received threats after giving an emotional testimony about an abortion she had as a teenager, according to sources familiar with the matter. She made the comments during a sex education bill hearing on Monday.

Nevada state Assemblywoman Lucy Flores (D-Las Vegas) canceled a TV appearance Wednesday because of the threatening messages she had received after her April 1 appearance, Las Vegas NBC affiliate KSNV producer Dana Gentry told The Huffington Post on Thursday.

Nevada Led the Country in Expanding the Vote. Now, It's Eyeing Voter ID

Nevada boasted the nation’s highest turnout increase on Election Day, thanks to its innovative efforts to make voting more accessible. But less than a month later, Secretary of State Ross Miller, a Democrat, is now suggesting the use of voter ID—which could reverse his own efforts to expand democracy and mean a lower turnout in subsequent elections.
