Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Trump Lashes Out At Conservative Republican, Calls Him 'RINO' For Backing Ron DeSantis

Former President Donald Trump is calling for a primary challenge against Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) because Roy backs Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, for president.

Roy appeared alongside DeSantis in Iowa for a Fox News interview that caught Trump’s attention on Monday evening.

“Has any smart and energetic Republican in the Great State of Texas decided to run in the Primary against RINO Congressman Chip Roy,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, using an acronym for “Republican in name only.” “For the right person, he is very beatable. If interested, let me know!!!”

Florida orders universities to ‘deactivate’ pro-Palestinian group

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida’s university system chancellor, responding to a push by Gov. Ron DeSantis, directed state universities Tuesday to disband campus groups with ties to the national Students for Justice in Palestine organization, marking the first punishments handed down to colleges here amid the Israel-Hamas war.

In a memo to school leaders, the state ordered a “crack down” on campus events led by the pro-Palestinian organization that the DeSantis administration claims amount to “harmful support for terrorist groups” like Hamas, which attacked Israel in early October. Florida, under Republican presidential candidate DeSantis, has staunchly supported Israel during the ongoing war and was monitoring college protests that have since ignited.

In an interview with Newsmax’s Eric Bolling on Wednesday, the GOP presidential candidate, weighed in on how he’d approach their sentences if he were elected president.

Christie knocks DeSantis for not meeting Biden during visit to survey hurricane damage

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday blasted Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for what he said was putting “politics ahead of his job,” after DeSantis snubbed President Joe Biden over the weekend during his visit to survey the damage caused by Hurricane Idalia.

“Your job as governor is to be the tour guide for the president, is to make sure the president sees your people, sees the damage, sees the suffering, what’s going on and what needs to be done to rebuild it,” Christie said during an interview on Fox News Radio’s “The Brian Kilmeade Show.” “You’re doing your job. And unfortunately, he put politics ahead of his job. That was his choice.”

DeSantis' Florida Redistricting Map Is Unconstitutional And Must Be Redrawn: Judge

A Florida redistricting plan pushed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis violates the state constitution and is prohibited from being used for any future U.S. congressional elections since it diminishes the ability of Black voters in north Florida to pick a representative of their choice, a state judge ruled Saturday.

Circuit Judge J. Lee Marsh sent the plan back to the Florida Legislature with instructions that lawmakers should draw a new congressional map that complies with the Florida Constitution.

Ron DeSantis Warns Trespassers In Hurricane Idalia Aftermath: 'You Loot, We Shoot'

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Wednesday warned looters that his state’s residents could gun them down if they catch them invading their properties following the devastating impact of Hurricane Idalia.

“I’ve seen signs in different people’s yards in the past after these disasters, and I would say it’s probably here: ‘you loot, we shoot,’” he said during a press conference in Perry. “You never know what’s behind that door if you go break into somebody’s house.”

DeSantis tells Biden: Keep your IRA money

President Joe Biden is offering one of his White House challengers hundreds of millions of dollars to spend in his state. The only problem: that opponent is refusing to take it.

The Inflation Reduction Act makes Florida eligible for some $350 million in energy efficiency incentives. But Gov. Ron DeSantis has rejected the funding and other measures, creating the most prominent blockade by any Republican governor against Biden’s economic agenda.

And there’s nothing the White House can do besides hope he changes his mind.

Ron DeSantis’s Florida is a dangerous and hostile place for Black Americans

On Saturday, three Black lives were stolen in Jacksonville, Florida, at a dollar store just blocks away from Edward Waters University, a historically Black university. Anolt Joseph “AJ” Laguerre Jr, 19; Jerrald De’Shaun Gallion, 29; and Angela Michelle Carr, 52, were assassinated by a 21-year-old white supremacist who “hated Black people”, in the words of the local sheriff.

This intentional murder – like the many which came before it – was not only experienced by those whose lives were stolen and their families, but by every Black person in America. This murder and those like it are a constant reminder that Black people are nowhere safe. It is reminder that our presence, our absence, our movement, our stillness, our attempts to enjoy basic citizenship or complete the routine duties of human life – like grocery shopping – are liable to result in our death.

Ron DeSantis Booed At Vigil For Victims Of Jacksonville Shooting

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) was booed on Sunday at a vigil for the victims of Saturday’s racist attack at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville.

Three people were killed in the shooting.

Footage from several angles shows the governor ― who is also running for president ― getting jeered by the crowd.

Jacksonville City Councilwoman Ju’Coby Pittman asked the crowd to settle down and put political parties aside.

DeSantis Pledges to Send Military Into Mexico to Fight Cartels on ‘Day One’

Florida Governor Ron Desantis said on Wednesday night that he would send the military into Mexico to fight drug cartels on “day one” of his presidency if he wins the 2024 presidential election.

At the Republican presidential debate in Milwaukee, DeSantis was asked if he would support sending in US special forces to take out fentanyl labs and other drug cartel operations. “Yes, and I will do it on day one,” he replied.

“We have to reestablish the rule of law and we have to defend our people. The president of the United States has got to use all available powers as commander in chief to protect our country,” DeSantis said.

Ron DeSantis Attacks Trump's Cult Of Personality, Calls Devotees 'Listless Vessels'

If 2024 Republican presidential hopeful and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is trying to woo Donald Trump’s base, he’s taking a strange approach.

DeSantis harped about the former president’s hold on the Republican Party during a sit-down interview with The Florida Standard, calling Trump followers “listless vessels” in a video published by the conservative outlet on Saturday.

“You could be the most conservative person since sliced bread. Unless you’re kissing his rear end, they will somehow call you a RINO,” he said, challenging those who call conservative Trump critics “Republicans in name only.”

Ron DeSantis Suggests That Donald Trump Shouldn’t Be Running For President

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has treaded cautiously around Donald Trump in the Republican presidential primary, careful not to suggest that Trump’s mounting legal troubles or his loss in 2020 make him the wrong choice for the GOP nomination.

But in a local radio interview Tuesday, DeSantis came closer than ever to suggesting that Trump, the GOP front-runner despite all his baggage, shouldn’t have joined the 2024 race.

“Well, look, I never thought he should run to begin with, even before all these legal cases when he left office in January of 2021,” DeSantis told veteran Boston journalist Dan Rea on WBZ NewsRadio.
