Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Chris Christie Predicts ‘The Minute’ Trump's 2024 Campaign Will Start To Crumble

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said polls of the Republican presidential race don’t tell the full story of what could happen to Donald Trump once primary voters actually start casting ballots next year.

“A lot of people will say they’re for Trump now because he’s winning,” Christie told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “The minute someone else is feasible, is plausible ― and by winning either the caucuses in Iowa or the primary in New Hampshire, you’re more than feasible or plausible. You’re now someone who has defeated Donald Trump. That becomes a whole different story.”

Christie knocks DeSantis for not meeting Biden during visit to survey hurricane damage

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday blasted Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for what he said was putting “politics ahead of his job,” after DeSantis snubbed President Joe Biden over the weekend during his visit to survey the damage caused by Hurricane Idalia.

“Your job as governor is to be the tour guide for the president, is to make sure the president sees your people, sees the damage, sees the suffering, what’s going on and what needs to be done to rebuild it,” Christie said during an interview on Fox News Radio’s “The Brian Kilmeade Show.” “You’re doing your job. And unfortunately, he put politics ahead of his job. That was his choice.”

Chris Christie’s Darkness on the Edge of the GOP Primary

Chris Christie couldn’t have asked for more from New Hampshire.

A warm August evening, free of the monsoons of early summer. A full, friendly audience, seated outdoors at the Elks Lodge in Salem. An aide handing out signs and water bottles. A glowing introduction from the state’s popular Republican governor. Even the pro-Trump heckler, parked down the hill on the roadside, gave Christie’s sharp tongue an easy target.

It all looked perfect, but it was a lot less than that, because it was all a reminder of glory days.

'Drop Out Tomorrow': Chris Christie Turns Ramaswamy's Trump Praise Around On Him

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie asked “what the hell” Vivek Ramaswamy is doing running for president if he thinks Donald Trump is the “best president” of the 21st century, as he declared during the first GOP presidential debate.

Ramaswamy made that comment on the debate stage Wednesday in response to fellow candidate Christie, who said Trump’s “conduct” was beneath the office of president.

Chris Christie-Backed Bill Would Devastate Newspapers That Hold His Feet To The Fire

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) has long had an adversarial relationship with the press.

Now, in what newspapers in his state are calling little more than an act of revenge, he’s trying to push through a bill that would cut a substantial portion of their revenue.

New Jersey, like every other state, requires governments to post public notices to inform citizens about certain events. These ads ― also called legal notices ― vary from state to state, but typically cover matters like bidding for public contracts, hearings, sales of government property and foreclosures.

Chris Christie’s ‘Fairness Formula’ For Public Schools Is Anything But Fair

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie proposed a plan he has called the “Fairness Formula” to equalize education funding so that all public schools receive the same amount of money from the state per pupil: $6,599.

“No child’s dreams are less worthy than any others,” Christie said in his speech at Hillsborough High School on Tuesday. Currently, $5.1 billion of that money goes to 31 districts and $4 billion goes to 546 districts, Christie said. But in practice, this plan tells the public the very opposite. The plan would help students such as those at Hillsborough High School, located in a majority white suburb, but it would take money away from the most disadvantaged kids in New Jersey.

Donald Trump Picks Man He Accused Of A Federal Crime To Lead His Transition Team

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has tapped New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to lead his White House transition team.

“Governor Christie is an extremely knowledgeable and loyal person with the tools and resources to put together an unparalleled transition team, one that will be prepared to take over the White House when we win in November,” Trump said in a statement on Monday.

The Most Disappointing Thing About Chris Christie’s Endorsement Of Donald Trump

In a somewhat surprising development, Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) endorsed Donald Trump for president on Friday.

“There is no one who is better prepared to provide America with the strong leadership that it needs both at home and around the world, than Donald Trump,” Christie said at a news conference. “He is, looking at the five people on that stage last night [at the GOP debate], the clear standout, and the person who will do exactly what needs to be done to make America a leader around the world again.”

Chris Christie Vetoes Election Reform Bill In New Jersey

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) vetoed a package of election reforms passed by the state's Democrat-controlled legislature Monday, arguing the legislation was "thinly-veiled political gamesmanship."

The Democracy Act aimed to implement automatic voter registration when voters apply for driver's licenses. (Eligible voters have the option to opt out before they are automatically registered with Department of Motor Vehicles information.) Only two states -- California and Oregon -- have passed automatic registration bills.

Growing Chorus Of Conservatives Accusing Black Lives Matter Of Advocating Murder Of Police

During an interview on CBS’ “Face The Nation” Sunday, former New Jersey governor and 2016 GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie told host John Dickerson that President Obama has encouraged “lawlessness” with his support of civil rights movements like Black Lives Matter.

After noting that murder rates have gone up in cities like Chicago and New York, Christie said that “the problem is this — there is lawlessness in this country.”

Chris Christie Wants To Track Immigrants Like FedEx Packages

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Saturday revealed a plan to curb unauthorized immigration: track anyone who enters the country from the time they receive their visa, like a FedEx package.

At a New Hampshire town hall, the presidential hopeful lamented that 40 percent of the undocumented immigrants in the United States entered on legal visas that they had overstayed.

Why Chris Christie Says We Should ‘Reexamine’ The 14th Amendment

Republican presidential candidate and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is calling for a reexamination of constitutional policy that grants citizenship to all children born to undocumented immigrants on United States soil.

In a radio appearance on Wednesday, conservative host Laura Ingraham asked Christie for his opinion on birthright citizenship, a topic he does not seem to have specifically addressed before. In response, Christie said he believed the policy may be outdated.

Teachers Demand Chris Christie Apologize For Face-Punching Comment

Teachers are fighting back after Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie said Sunday that their unions deserve a punch in the face.
The American Federation of Teachers -- the specific union apparently referenced by Christie during his interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper -- is promoting a petition asking Christie to apologize for threatening teachers. The petition, launched earlier this week, had over 28,000 signatures as of Wednesday morning.

Chris Christie Said He Thinks Teachers Unions Deserve A Punch In The Face

Presidential candidate Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) lambasted teachers unions on Sunday.

"At the national level, who deserves a punch in the face?” CNN's Jake Tapper asked the New Jersey governor during an interview. The question was a callback, he said, to Christie's affinity for saying during his first term that "you can either sidle up to [bullies] or you can punch them in the face."

Governor Chris Christie Wants To Be President. Here’s How He Hurt New Jersey

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) will announce on Tuesday at his former high school in Livingston, New Jersey that he will enter the already-crowded pool of Republican candidates vying for the presidency.

While the two-term governor and former chair of the Republican Governors Association gained a national reputation early in his tenure for his brash demeanor and tendency to say whatever comes to mind, his leadership of the Garden State should be a better indication of how he would lead the country.

Jeb Bush And Chris Christie Spout Anti-Women Rhetoric At Conservative Conference

WASHINGTON, DC — “It was right here in this room that we celebrated the burial of the Equal Rights Amendment,” conservative Phyllis Schlafly, who led the fight against the constitutional amendment in the 1970s, told a cheering crowd in Washington, D.C. on Friday. “We were able to celebrate a tremendous victory against all the powers that be, and of all the things we taught people by defeating the Equal Rights Amendment, it was that conservatives can win.”

Chris Christie Suggests College Students Should Sell Themselves To Investors To Pay Tuition

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) spoke about student debt, school choice and teacher accountability at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, on Thursday. Christie is expected to announce a presidential run soon.
After delivering an account of how his father, an excellent student who was accepted at Columbia University, enlisted in the Army instead because he couldn’t afford the tuition, Christie said debt-free college was not the answer.

Bridge Scandal May Be Death Knell For Chris Christie's 2016 Prospects

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The charges handed down against three former allies of Gov. Chris Christie in the George Washington Bridge traffic scandal provide mixed news for the Republican governor as he tries to regain momentum in support of an expected presidential bid.

Christie appears to have been cleared of any allegations that he personally participated in a scheme to shut down access lanes to the George Washington Bridge in September 2013. But the charges brought by the U.S. Attorney's Office in New Jersey still hit close to home: His former deputy chief of staff, Bridget Kelly, and his former top appointee to the authority that controls the bridge, Bill Baroni, have both been indicted. David Wildstein, another ally, pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy.

Christie Promises To ‘Crack Down’ On Marijuana If Elected President

During a radio interview with Hugh Hewitt, Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) claimed he will “crack down” on states that have legalized marijuana, if he becomes President in the future.
“Marijuana is a gateway drug. We have an enormous addiction problem in this country,” said Christie. “And we need to send very clear leadership from the White House on down through the federal law enforcement. Marijuana is an illegal drug under federal law. And the states should not be permitted to sell it and profit from it.” Asked if he’ll enforce federal law in Washington and Colorado, he responded, “Absolutely. I will crack down and not permit it.”

Chris Christie Embraces 20-Week Abortion Ban

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Monday joined other potential 2016 Republican presidential candidates in endorsing a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

“I am proud to be a pro-life Republican," Christie said in a statement to the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List, which solicited endorsements of the legislation from Republicans. "I believe that every life is an individual gift from God, and that no life is disposable."
