Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Antisemites supporting Israel is weird. Jewish support of them is even weirder

Perhaps the most bizarre spectacle of the past month has been watching some of the world’s most wretched antisemites lining up to give their unalloyed support to Israel. Even more jarring has been their embrace by those who are supposed to advocate for Jewish safety.

These people include the radical US pastor John Hagee, who previously claimed that Adolf Hitler had been born from a lineage of “accursed, genocidally murderous half-breed Jews” and sent by God to help the Jews reach the promised land. (He apologized in 2008 for some of his remarks.) He was invited to speak last Tuesday to an audience of thousands at the March for Israel in Washington, organised by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, to help “condemn the rising trend of antisemitic violence”.

Right-Wing Figures Go All In On Antisemitism

All at once, major American conservative figures seem to be using the Israel-Hamas conflict as an opportunity to flaunt antisemitic views.

After Hamas’ deadly incursion into Israel last month, and as the death toll continues to climb in Gaza from Israel’s ongoing retaliatory invasion, right-wing leaders from Charlie Kirk to Elon Musk have found a way to fault Jews worldwide.

Essentially, they argue that left-wing Jews who have supported progressive causes have incited racial division and hatred. Antisemitic claims along these lines have been around for years — they’re just usually dressed up as opposition to “cultural Marxism.”

Elon Musk Calls Antisemitic Conspiracy Theory 'The Actual Truth'

Elon Musk, whose 2022 acquisition of X (then known as Twitter) included major cuts to content moderation around hate speech, drew a fresh wave of backlash this week by endorsing an antisemitic social media post that he described as “the actual truth.”

On Wednesday, an X user shared footage of a PSA created by the Foundation To Combat Antisemitism, which shows a father confronting his teenage son for posting a neo-Nazi message online.

Trump Says On Rosh Hashanah That ‘Liberal Jews’ Voted To ‘Destroy America’

Former President Donald Trump marked the start of the Jewish High Holy Days with a fiery missive on Sunday reminding his followers that “liberal Jews” voted to “destroy America & Israel” through their support of Joe Biden.

Trump took to his Truth Social platform to wish Jewish Americans a happy new year on Rosh Hashanah.

Louis Farrakhan denies antisemitism – then refers to 'Satanic Jews'

In a speech denying allegations of antisemitism, misogyny and homophobia after Facebook banned him from the social media platform, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan referred to “Satanic Jews”.

During the speech on Thursday at a Catholic church on Chicago’s South Side, Farrakhan said people shouldn’t be angry if “I stand on God’s word”. He also said that he knows “the truth” and “separate[s] the good Jews from the Satanic Jews”.

Equalities And Human Rights Watchdog Paves Way For Investigation Into Labour Anti-Semitism

The UK’s Equalities and Human Rights Commission has paved the way for a formal investigation into anti-Semitism within Labour.

The dramatic move by the watchdog follows dossiers of complaints handed to it by the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism (CAA) and by the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) last year.

Seven MPs leave the U.K.’s Labour party, citing anti-Semitism

Seven members of the United Kingdom’s left-wing Labour party have announced that they are leaving the party, owing, they said, to widespread anti-Semitic sentiment within the party.

One of the departing MPs, Luciana Berger, told reporters that she could not “remain in the party that I have today come to the sickening conclusion is institutionally anti-Semitic.”

Why Israel does not mind Trump’s anti-Semitic supporters

The massacre of Jewish worshippers on Saturday by an avowed anti-Semite in Pittsburgh reveals a clear, straight line between Trump’s sustained dog-whistles – against Jews, black people, Muslims, immigrants and members of the LGBTQ community – to the violence carried out by right-wing white nationalists.

Robert Bowers, apprehended after a shooting spree that killed 11 people, explained he wanted “all Jews to die” and described immigrants and asylum-seekers as “invaders” of the United States. Instead of condemning far-right nationalism, Trump reinforced this hysteria, tweeting on Monday that a caravan of asylum-seekers coming from Honduras should be considered as an “invasion” and that the US military “would be waiting” for them. Last week, Trump proudly embraced the “nationalist” term.

Jeremy Corbyn's Allies Deny Anti-Semitism Row Has Caused Labour Membership To Drop

Allies of Jeremy Corbyn have rejected fresh claims his handling of Labour’s anti-Semitism crisis has coincided with a big fall in party members.

Centrist campaigners renewed their attacks on the party leader as they alleged that total party membership had dropped markedly in recent months.

HuffPost UK has learned Labour sent out 506,320 ballots for its recent NEC elections, based on the number of members eligible to vote for seats on the ruling body.

Labour NEC’s Pete Willsman Urges Members To Vote For Him To ‘Defend Corbyn’ Against Anti-Semitism ‘Smears’

A Labour activist dumped by Momentum over his remarks about Jews has issued a final plea to party members to keep him on the ruling National Executive Committee, claiming he will continue to defend Jeremy Corbyn against “attacks and smears”.

Peter Willsman sparked fury in July when he criticised British rabbis who had complained about anti-Semitism, adding that some members of the Jewish community were “Trump fanatics making up information”.

Labour's Chris Williamson Praises Vanessa Beeley, Blogger Who Called Jo Cox A 'Warmongering Blairite'

A Labour MP has said it was a “privilege” to meet and listen to a talk by a controversial pro-Assad blogger, who has previously described murdered MP Jo Cox as a “warmongering Al Qaeda advocate”.

Vanessa Beeley made the comment in a tweet almost a year after Cox’s death, and has also written that “Zionists rule France”.

Derby North MP Chris Williamson met Beeley at the Beautiful Days festival over the weekend, where she appeared on stage to discuss the Syrian conflict.

Corbyn Ally And Union Boss Len McCluskey Turns On Jewish Leaders After Wreath Row

Len McCluskey has hit out at what he calls the “intransigent hostility” of Jewish community leaders and accused “Blairite” Labour MPs of exploiting the anti-Semitism row to provoke a split in the party.

Writing for HuffPost UK on Thursday afternoon, the general secretary of the Unite union and close ally of Jeremy Corbyn, said Labour risked descending “into a vortex of McCarthyism”.

Anti-Semitic crimes on the rise in Germany

The number of anti-Semitic crimes in Germany increased substantially in the first six months of this year compared to the same period in 2017.

According to figures from the government, 401 such crimes were reported in the first half of the year, a rise of more than 10 percentage points. Most of the offences — 349 — had a far-right motive. Twelve of the 401 were classed as violent crimes.

Jeremy Corbyn: Labour is not a threat to Jewish life in Britain

Jeremy Corbyn has broken his silence over the antisemitism row engulfing Labour, acknowledging the party has “a real problem” over the issue but strongly rejecting the idea that it poses any threat to the Jewish community in the UK.

Writing in the Guardian following increasing calls for him to take a lead and address the concerns of many Jewish groups, the Labour leader accepted that the party’s incomplete adoption of an internationally recognised definition of antisemitism had caused genuine worries.

Jeremy Corbyn won’t compromise — no matter the cost

LONDON — The greatest danger to Jeremy Corbyn is himself.

Despite the almost-daily revelations about anti-Semitism in the Labour Party, which have reached all the way to the leader’s door, Corbyn remains all-but unassailable for now, most MPs and senior party aides say.

But the crisis has exposed a split at the very top of the Labour movement which — if not contained — poses a genuine threat to the Corbyn project, some senior figures now believe.

Jeremy Corbyn's Anti-Semitism Crisis Escalates As Labour Referred To Human Rights Watchdog

The UK’s human rights watchdog has been urged to investigate the Labour Party as pressure continues to mount over Jeremy Corbyn’s handling of the anti-Semitism row.

The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) has referred the party to the Equality and Human Rights Commission and made a complaint to Labour about comments by Corbyn and his hosting of a Holocaust Memorial Day event in 2010 at which speakers reportedly compared the actions of Israel in Gaza to the Nazis.

Labour MP Ian Austin Brands Jeremy Corbyn A ‘Defender Of Extremists’ As Anti-Semitism Row Deepens

A Labour MP has accused Jeremy Corbyn of “supporting and defending” extremists and anti-Semites in an astonishing attack on the party leader.

Ian Austin lashed out at the leader of the Opposition after it was revealed he is facing possible disciplinary action for clashing with the party chairman over the ruling National Executive Committee’s failure to fully adopt a widely-backed definition of anti-Semitism.

In Leaked Chats, WikiLeaks Discusses Preference for GOP Over Clinton, Russia, Trolling, and Feminists They Don’t Like

On a Thursday afternoon in November 2015, a light snow was falling outside the windows of the Ecuadorian embassy in London, despite the relatively warm weather, and Julian Assange was inside, sitting at his computer and pondering the upcoming 2016 presidential election in the United States.

In little more than a year, WikiLeaks would be engulfed in a scandal over how it came to publish internal emails that damaged Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, and the extent to which it worked with Russian hackers or Donald Trump’s campaign to do so. But in the fall of 2015, Trump was polling at less than 30 percent among Republican voters, neck-and-neck with neurosurgeon Ben Carson, and Assange spoke freely about why WikiLeaks wanted Clinton and the Democrats to lose the election.

The Fight Against Anti-Semitism: Carin Mrotz Breaks Out the Cleaning Supplies

The large, red swastika spray-painted onto a Minneapolis garage door in November 2016 was not even drawn correctly.

Half of its loopy, lurid arms bent right; the others, nearly touching, bent left, lacking the ironclad symmetry of the iconic Nazi symbol. Yet it appeared on a garage door on the city’s north side just days after Donald Trump was elected President of the United States. A photo of it was posted on social media. That’s how Carin Mrotz first became aware of it.

Virginia gubernatorial candidate blames the left for anti-Semitism

Virginia Republican Corey Stewart thinks that the left is to blame for rising anti-Semitism in the United States.

According to the Washington Post, Stewart, a gubernatorial candidate, was speaking at a Northern Virginia synagogue in Fairfax County Sunday night when he blamed progressives in the United States for an uptick in anti-Semitic incidents across the country.
