Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Super-rich prepare to leave UK 'within minutes' if Labour wins election

The super-rich are preparing to immediately leave the UK if Jeremy Corbyn becomes prime minister, fearing they will lose billions of pounds if the Labour leader does “go after” the wealthy elite with new taxes, possible capital controls and a clampdown on private schools.

Lawyers and accountants for the UK’s richest families said they had been deluged with calls from millionaire and billionaire clients asking for help and advice on moving countries, shifting their fortunes offshore and making early gifts to their children to avoid the Labour leader’s threat to tax all inheritances above £125,000.

The Labour leadership’s support for Julian Assange has prompted a new row in the party, with several MPs accusing the frontbench of downplaying the allegations of sexual assault against the WikiLeaks founder.

The shadow home secretary, Diane Abbott, joined Jeremy Corbyn in calling on the government to block Assange’s extradition after he was arrested on behalf of US authorities, who have charged him with involvement in a computer-hacking conspiracy.

The UK’s Equalities and Human Rights Commission has paved the way for a formal investigation into anti-Semitism within Labour.

The dramatic move by the watchdog follows dossiers of complaints handed to it by the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism (CAA) and by the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) last year.

Majority Of Marginal Seats Back EU Membership, According To New Analysis

If a referendum was held today 55 of the 89 most marginal constituencies would support EU membership, up from just 25 which backed Remain in 2016, according to new analysis.

The study by Professor Chris Hanretty from Royal Holloway said Jeremy Corbyn’s path to Downing Street runs through seats that have switched since the Brexit vote.

Keir Starmer Claims 'Brexit Can Be Stopped', Despite What Jeremy Corbyn Said

Labour’s Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer has contradicted Jeremy Corbyn by insisting Brexit can be stopped.

In an interview with Der Spiegel last week, the Labour leader said “we can’t stop” the UK’s departure from the EU and said Labour had to “recognise the reasons why people voted Leave”.

But speaking to Sky News on Monday morning, Starmer said: “Brexit can be stopped.

“But the real question is what are the decisions we are going to face over the next few weeks and months?

Labour's New Policies Fail To Excite Voters, HuffPost UK Poll Reveals

Jeremy Corbyn’s blitz of new policies announced at Labour’s conference last week have not won over new voters, a poll for HuffPost UK suggests.

Labour Dashes Anti-Brexit Hopes After Blocking Move To Formally Promise A Second EU Referendum

Labour has dashed the hopes of anti-Brexit campaigners by blocking moves to formally commit the party to holding a second EU referendum.

A tense, five-hour meeting of local party and union delegates agreed instead to debate a motion that merely kept open the option of a ‘People’s Vote’ on whatever exit deal Theresa May hammers out with Brussels.

Labour 'finished' if it backs Brexit in a snap election, says Adonis

A pro-EU Labour peer and former cabinet minister has said the party is “finished” if it contests another election promising to back Brexit, as a new poll suggested the party’s support depends heavily on remain voters who could switch their allegiance to the Lib Dems.

Andrew Adonis, a former transport minister and a vocal critic on Britain’s departure from the EU, said the party could not be seen as an “accomplice to Brexit” should a snap election take place before March 2019.

A month to save Corbyn’s Labour

LONDON — The walls are closing in on Jeremy Corbyn.

The U.K. Labour leader has less than a month to back down in his dispute with the Jewish community over the definition of anti-Semitism or face a potentially catastrophic rupture in the party which could see a number of his MPs resign in protest, some of his closest and most influential allies said.

According to two senior Labour figures, two of the power bases behind the Labour leader — the campaign group Momentum and a major trade union — are prepared to break ranks with Corbyn over the dispute. That would mark the most significant split in support for Corbyn from at least part of his base since his unexpected rise to power in 2015.

Speaking at the London School of Economics on Monday evening, Kinnock said Labour should learn from Hillary Clinton’s defeat to Donald Trump.

Labour voters increasingly turning against the poor, study says

Labour party supporters increasingly believe that welfare recipients are undeserving and that the welfare state encourages dependence, with a noticeable share saying that poverty is caused by a personal failing rather than a problem with society, a landmark study reveals.

A report for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation examined the links between public attitudes to poverty, welfare and the state of the economy using data collected as part of the British Social Attitudes survey.
