Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

All the posts here were published in the electronic media – main-stream as well as fringe, and maintain links to the original texts.

Giuliani spread lies about Georgia election workers. A jury will decide what he owes them.

When Rudy Giuliani steps into federal court on Monday, the only mystery will be how severely he is sanctioned for lies about the 2020 election.

U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell has already found him liable for defaming two Georgia election workers — Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss — who faced threats and harassment after Giuliani and Donald Trump falsely accused them of manipulating ballots after the 2020 election. Those lies fueled conspiracy theories that have festered to this day.

Trump Falsely Claims He 'Was Never Indicted' Despite Being Indicted 4 Times

Depending on how you feel about Donald Trump, today was either an embarrassment of riches or just an embarrassment.

The former president was in Derry, New Hampshire, on Monday to hold a rally and to sign up for the New Hampshire presidential primary, The Associated Press reported.

Another GOP ‘Bombshell’ About Joe Biden Turns Out To Be A Dud

WASHINGTON — Republicans announced Friday that they had uncovered a “direct payment” to President Joe Biden — exactly the kind of evidence they’ve sought linking Biden to his family’s foreign business deals.

But the March 2018 payment came from Joe Biden’s brother James, not a Ukrainian oligarch or Chinese tycoon, and the check was marked as a “loan repayment.”

Trump Is Lying About Another Election Being ‘Stolen’ From Him — The One Still A Year Away

WASHINGTON — Despite facing decades in prison for the fallout from his last round of lies about the 2020 election, Donald Trump is already claiming — again without any evidence — that the 2024 election will be stolen from him, too.

At one campaign event after another, the former president claims that Democrats are already scheming to steal the election from him, and that the only way to stop them is to win so overwhelmingly to make it impossible for them to get away with it.

Trump Is Back With One Of His Most Outlandish, Easily Debunked Abortion Lies

Former President Donald Trump revived one of his most egregious lies about abortion during an interview televised Sunday, repeatedly making the easily debunked claim that multiple states allow physicians to “kill the baby after birth.”

The former president and 2024 Republican front-runner made the claims during a pretaped sit-down interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Trump insisted on this being true eight times throughout the interview, despite moderator Kristen Welker’s repeated corrections.

Trump Claims His 'Very Smart' Democratic Friends Think He's A COVID Savior

Donald Trump seemed to want it both ways while bragging about his response to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic this week.

Dubiously boasting about having bipartisan support, Trump told Megyn Kelly his “very smart” Democratic friends loved his coronavirus policies but that he wasn’t “proud” of his work on the vaccine, which remains a tense talking point among conservatives.

Fox Corp. Sued Again For Spreading Donald Trump's 2020 Election Lies

Fox News’ parent company is facing more legal troubles for amplifying former President Donald Trump’s 2020 election lies.

Pension funds for New York City and the state of Oregon sued Fox Corp. in Delaware on Tuesday. They allege that as shareholders they were negatively impacted by Fox News’ decisions to air falsehoods, which resulted in a $787.5 million defamation settlement with Dominion Voting Systems and other legal claims.

Lindsey Graham Makes WTF Claim About Trump Indictments And Gets Corrected

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said on Fox News Wednesday that Donald Trump was being treated like a criminal simply for challenging election results, inviting fierce fact-checks from critics on the platform formerly called Twitter, now known as X.

As many Republicans have done, Graham noted that the four-time-indicted Trump is facing charges in court venues where he’s not popular.

“He’s been prosecuted in a way to make challenging an election a crime just for him,” he said on “Hannity.”

Trump is undermining the entire US judicial system with another big lie

Not content with trying to destroy America’s trust in the US election system with his big lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him, Donald Trump is now trying to destroy America’s trust in the US judicial system with another big lie.

The second big lie is that judges, prosecutors, witnesses and juries are corruptly prosecuting Trump as a means of keeping him from being re-elected.

After Getting Indicted Over Election Lies, Trump Promises More Election Lies

Just hours after former President Donald Trump was indicted in Georgia over his attempt to disrupt the 2020 election, Trump announced he’ll hold a news conference to once again push baseless claims that the election was rigged.

“A Large, Complex, Detailed but Irrefutable REPORT on the Presidential Election Fraud which took place in Georgia is almost complete & will be presented by me at a major News Conference at 11:00 A.M. Monday of next week, in Bedminster, New Jersey,” Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social on Tuesday. “Based on the results of this CONCLUSIVE report, all charges should be dropped against me & others — There will be a complete EXONERATION!”

Despite His Boasts, Trump Didn’t Wipe Out ISIS After All

WASHINGTON – The deadly bombing near the Kabul airport on Thursday, which left 170 dead, including 13 U.S. service members, dismantled yet another of former President Donald Trump’s boasts: that he had “eradicated” the ISIS terror group.

In the latter three years of his presidency, Trump repeatedly claimed he had eliminated the threat.

At an April 28, 2018, rally in Michigan, Trump bragged: “We have really wiped out ISIS.”

Denialism: what drives people to reject the truth

We are all in denial, some of the time at least. Part of being human, and living in a society with other humans, is finding clever ways to express – and conceal – our feelings. From the most sophisticated diplomatic language to the baldest lie, humans find ways to deceive. Deceptions are not necessarily malign; at some level they are vital if humans are to live together with civility. As Richard Sennett has argued: “In practising social civility, you keep silent about things you know clearly but which you should not and do not say.”

The fallacy of Israel's human shields claims in Gaza

It has become part of a macabre ritual. Each week, thousands of Palestinians stride towards the fence surrounding the small swath of land in which they have been imprisoned for years, as Israeli snipers pick their victims and shoot.

Since March 30, 132 Palestinians have been killed and over 13,000 have been injured as they have courageously protested the effects of Israel's ongoing military siege on Gaza.

Vladimir Putin: Western sanctions 'harmful for everyone'

President Vladimir Putin has said Western sanctions against Russia are "harmful for everyone" and it is in everyone's interests to lift them.

Speaking in Austria, he said Russia had restored stable growth, despite the EU and US sanctions first imposed in 2014 after Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimea.

Report Suggests Blackwater Founder Erik Prince May Have Lied to Congress

Blackwater founder Erik Prince appears to have a problem. The New York Times reported Saturday that Prince, the brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, arranged and attended an August 3, 2016 Trump Tower meeting where George Nader, an adviser to the de facto ruler of the United Arab Emirates, told Donald Trump Jr. that UAE and Saudi Arabia were eager to help his father win the election.

I’ve covered Obamacare since day one. I’ve never seen lying and obstruction like this

Republicans do not want the country to know what is in their health care bill.

This has become more evident each day, as the Senate plots out a secretive path toward Obamacare repeal — and top White House officials (including the president) consistently lie about what the House bill actually does.

There was even a brief moment Tuesday where Senate Republicans flirted with the idea of banning on-camera interviews in congressional hallways, a plan quickly reversed after outcry from the press.

Paul Ryan says “death tax” hurts Wisconsin small businesses. IRS data shows otherwise

Does the estate tax really hurt small businesses? House Speaker Paul Ryan thinks so.

He revived this longstanding debate in a May 17 column in the Kenosha News, in which he defended the Republican plan to abolish the levy on inherited wealth. Ryan wrote that the “death tax” can “result in double, and potentially even triple, taxation on small businesses and family farms, both of which are prevalent in Wisconsin.”

Brexit White Paper Basically Reveals The Reason For Leaving The EU Isn’t True

Parliament has been sovereign the entire time we’ve been in the EU but it “hasn’t always felt like that,” according to the Government’s plan for restoring parliamentary sovereignty through Brexit.

Arguments for leaving the EU - from immigration to regulation - rested on the idea that EU membership eroded parliament’s sovereignty.

Our democracies are drowning in a sea of lies

In a clickbait universe, a Trump is always king.

These days, the only thing melting away faster than the polar ice caps is democracy, largely because of the steady degradation of information. In the end, you are what you know.

With only 9 per cent of Canadians willing to pay for news online, an informational Dark Age looms. It’s already consumed the United States, where fake news is giving reality a run for its money — as illustrated by the magical mystery tour of one Donald J. Trump. Fake crowd sizes, fake numbers for illegal voting, fake promises.

Brexit counterfactual What if the UK had voted to Remain?

LONDON — It seems a long time ago, that dawn in June, when the United Kingdom voted 52 percent to 48 percent to stay in the European Union.

Few, if anybody, at the time had talked about the possibility of a “Hard Remain.” To the contrary, many of the loudest voices in the campaign to stay, including then Prime Minister David Cameron, insisted that victory would be a continuation of the status quo, with the U.K. enjoying the pick-and-choose relationship it already has.
