Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Watch Fox News Try — And Fail — To Get Sarah Huckabee Sanders To Endorse Trump

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R) repeatedly refused to endorse Donald Trump’s third run for president in an interview on Fox News on Monday.

Instead, the former Trump White House press secretary ― whose two-year tenure in the role was characterized by her peddling of the then-president’s untruths and defense of his outrageous comments ― went off on tangents promoting her work in her state.

Fox’s Jacqui Heinrich first asked Sanders when she was “going to endorse somebody for 2024.”

MSNBC's Mehdi Hasan Spotlights Rupert Murdoch's Most 'Unremittingly Toxic' Legacy

MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan slammed the “very real wake of destruction” that Rupert Murdoch is leaving behind as the billionaire media baron prepares to step down as Fox Corp. and News Corp. chair.

“It’s difficult to sum up Murdoch’s unremittingly toxic and pernicious record, to encapsulate the sheer power of Murdoch to do damage to our politics, our media, our world,” Hasan wrote in an essay published on the MSNBC website on Sunday, an adapted version of a monologue he gave on his show in April.

Murdoch’s Legacy Includes Giving Airtime to Climate Denialism and the Far Right

As billionaire Rupert Murdoch announces he will resign as head of his media empire, we speak with Angelo Carusone, president and CEO of the watchdog group Media Matters for America, about the right-wing mogul’s influence on journalism and politics over the last seven decades. The 92-year-old Murdoch will step down as chair of Fox Corporation and News Corporation in November, with his son Lachlan to head both companies that control Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, New York Post and more. Carusone says as the elder Murdoch steps back, it’s important to “make sure that his legacy doesn’t get sugarcoated, that we are really cognizant of the scale of damage that he’s created,” which includes climate denialism and the growing influence of the far right in politics. Carusone also warns that Lachlan Murdoch is more conservative than his father, with a “nihilist” worldview that could make Fox News and other properties even more extreme.

CNN Torches Rupert Murdoch With Sickening Supercut Of Fox News At Its Worst

CNN’s Abby Phillip gave longtime Fox boss Rupert Murdoch a fitting send-off by airing an extended supercut of the right-wing network’s lowest moments.

“His legacy is outrage porn: partisan red meat stoking relentless culture wars,” she said of Murdoch, who on Thursday announced that he was stepping down as chair of Fox Corp. and News Corp.

She said Fox News began as what was arguably a “noble vision” of a center-right news network with views from outside the media bubbles of New York and Washington.

Fox News Contributor Taunts Rep. Lauren Boebert With Megan Thee Stallion Dig

Fox News contributor Raymond Arroyo urged Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) to “have some self-restraint” after the far-right congresswoman was booted from a performance of “Beetlejuice” at a Denver theater for disruptive behavior.

“You are the congresswoman of Colorado, not Megan Thee Stallion,” Arroyo said on Laura Ingraham’s prime-time show this week, referring to the rapper featured in “WAP.”

Fox Corp. Sued Again For Spreading Donald Trump's 2020 Election Lies

Fox News’ parent company is facing more legal troubles for amplifying former President Donald Trump’s 2020 election lies.

Pension funds for New York City and the state of Oregon sued Fox Corp. in Delaware on Tuesday. They allege that as shareholders they were negatively impacted by Fox News’ decisions to air falsehoods, which resulted in a $787.5 million defamation settlement with Dominion Voting Systems and other legal claims.

Jesse Watters Compliments Trump's Mug Shot: 'He Looks Good And He Looks Hard

Fox News host Jesse Watters on Friday admired Donald Trump for looking “good” and “hard” in wild comments about the former president’s recent mug shot.

The image was released Thursday after Trump turned himself in to Georgia’s Fulton County Jail on charges stemming from efforts to alter the state’s 2020 presidential election results.

Donald Trump Jr. Seethes At Fox News, Says It Tried To 'Censor' Him After GOP Debate

Donald Trump Jr. lambasted Fox News on Wednesday, accusing the conservative network of trying to “censor and silence” his father’s supporters because it had barred him from entering a spin room after the GOP presidential primary debate.

Trump Jr. and several others, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), attended the Milwaukee event as surrogates for former President Donald Trump, who declined to participate.

Fox News, the host of the event, restricted access to the post-debate spin room to allow only representatives of candidates who took part, according to an internal memo circulated in the media earlier this week.

Fox Executives Are Pouring Cash Into Joe Manchin’s Campaign

Since the 2020 presidential election, when Democrats emerged with a razor-thin majority in the Senate, Joe Manchin has been no stranger to his Republican colleagues: schmoozing with them on his houseboat, meeting to discuss concerns about President Joe Biden’s massive spending packages, and proving a consistent ally in derailing the aspirations of both Blue Dog Democrats and left-wing progressives.

MSNBC Anchors Stunned By GOP's New Faux Outrage: ‘Whole Thing Is A Joke’

MSNBC anchors Mehdi Hasan and Ayman Mohyeldin on Sunday mocked the latest instance of “faux outrage” from Republicans.

Many in the GOP were incensed with Attorney General Merrick Garland’s appointment Friday of U.S. Attorney David Weiss as special counsel for the investigation into Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden.

Fox News already freaking out about ‘thin-skinned autocrat’ socialist who is poised to win Mexican presidency

Fox News is already freaking out about the man who is expected to become the new president of Mexico, a socialist and nationalist who had pledged to aggressively clean up the country’s corruption.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador is polling at least 20 points ahead of two rivals for the country’s presidency, with the vote scheduled for Sunday.

Meet the Reporter Driving Fox News’s Biggest, Craziest Stories

On May 16, the day after The Washington Post reported that President Donald Trump had divulged intelligence secrets to two Russian officials in the Oval Office, Sean Hannity devoted much of his show to the murder of 27-year-old Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich. Using a report from Fox 5, a Fox News affiliate in Washington, D.C., Hannity relayed the allegation that Rich had been in contact with WikiLeaks prior to his death—the suggestion being that Rich was the source of the hacked DNC emails in the 2016 election, not Russian hackers. Hannity would continue to talk about Rich’s murder for the next week. Breitbart and the Drudge Report also led with the Rich story, not the story about Trump.

New Fox Harassment Allegations: “A Contributorship…Was Contingent Upon” Sex

A former frequent on-air guest at Fox News says that a Fox consultant and top lieutenant to Roger Ailes, the network’s late founder and longtime CEO, sexually harassed her repeatedly for more than a year, including dangling the possibility of a paid job at Fox if she would have sex with him.

The allegation appears in a written declaration by Caroline Heldman, an associate professor of politics at Occidental College who made numerous guest appearances on Fox starting in 2008. The Fox consultant, Woody Fraser, is a veteran television producer who helped create and produce shows such as Good Morning America and Wild and Crazy Kids* and worked closely with Ailes at Fox for nearly a decade. Fraser’s relationship with Ailes dated back to the 1960s, when he hired a young Ailes to work on The Mike Douglas Show. “It was the best hire I’ve ever made,” Fraser told an Ailes biographer.

Fox News ignores eyewitness account from its own reporter, buries GOP candidate’s assault charge

Fox News journalists were key witnesses to the violent incident that occurred on Wednesday in Montana involving Greg Gianforte, Republican House candidate in Thursday’s special election, and Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs. But you wouldn’t know it from watching Fox and Friends.

Bill O'Reilly Has a Thoroughly Bonkers New Conspiracy Theory About Why He Was Fired from Fox News

A resentful Bill O’Reilly has returned to national radio after being dumped by Fox News in April, and he has an ominous message.

"The entire ordeal was a hit job, and in the weeks to come, we will be able to explain some of it," the former "Factor" host told Glenn Beck in an interview Friday. "It has to do with destroying voices that the far-left and the organized left-wing cabal doesn’t like. That’s the general tone."

"I can’t get specific," he added. "There’s a lot of legality here."

Roger Ailes will be remembered as a lecherous, misogynistic and terrible boss — and that’s a good thing

Science and medicine will probably disagree with me, but I choose to believe that Roger Ailes died of a broken heart. Deprived of a steady stream of nubile employees to sexually exploit, the infamous Fox News CEO and progenitor of 21st-century-style authoritarian propaganda simply lost his will to live.

Ailes’s death was announced on Thursday, less than a year after his ouster from Fox News during a wave of accusations of sexual harassment from more than 20 women, thereby ensuring that Ailes will be remembered primarily as an alleged sexual predator. There are those who will no doubt worry that the legacy of his unrepentant lechery will crowd out other important aspects of his career, such as the way he replaced the goose-stepping severity of previous authoritarian propaganda with endless cheesecake and eye-bleedingly loud graphic design. But to my mind, there can be no better encapsulation of Ailes’s legacy than the struggle over the way he treated women.

Fox News Fires Bob Beckel Over Alleged Racist Remark

Fox News announced on Friday it has terminated Bob Beckel, co-host of “The Five.”

The network released this statement to Variety: “Bob Beckel was terminated today for making an insensitive remark to an African-American employee.”

Bill Shine Is Out As Fox News Co-President

Embattled Fox News Co-President Bill Shine resigned Monday following intense scrutiny about his stewardship of the network in the wake of the Bill O’Reilly scandal and amid growing sexual harassment and racial discrimination allegations.

A veteran network executive, Shine was promoted to co-president just weeks after Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes’ downfall over widespread sexual harassment claims, and his departure comes two weeks after top-rated host O’Reilly left the network due to a similar scandal.

Bill O’Reilly ruined the news: 10 ways he and Fox News harassed us all

On Wednesday Fox News announced that it would sever ties with Bill O’Reilly in response to multiple charges of sexual harassment and the retreat of a number of sponsors from “The O’Reilly Factor.” Without question the firing of O’Reilly, which follows the departure of Fox News founder Roger Ailes, who also had been accused of sexual harassment, is a positive sign.

But what will these shifts at Fox News really mean? Are we really rid of these two vile characters?

Is This the End of Bill O'Reilly? Let's Hope So: 18 Reminders That He's a Terrible Person

It's a given that Bill O’Reilly is a terrible person. Thing is, he’s been so thoroughly heinous for so interminably long, it can be hard to remember all the reasons why. Most recently, there have been new revelations about O’Reilly and Fox News paying millions in settlements to women who have been targets of his sexually inappropriate behavior. But reviewing O’Reilly’s history, there's a pattern of despicable behavior that goes back much further in time.

He's shown himself to be a raging racist and a bloviating bigot (for which Fox News audiences love him), a man who lies about his press credentials and morals in the same breath. He imagines himself a guardian of truth and the defender of American virtues being lost to brown, gay and godless hordes, when in fact, he's a huge dick.
