Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Quebec Student Protests: Tuition Protests Planned For Montreal And Quebec City

MONTREAL - Student leaders are urging people to march en masse through the streets of Montreal and Quebec City.

The calls by the heads of the movement opposing tuition fee increases come as protesters shift gears for the summer months.

Crowds are expected to gather in downtown Montreal for a march today as well as outside the provincial legislature in Quebec City.

The student protest movement has said it will also concentrate on information campaigns during the summer when many students have summer jobs.

They plan to hand out pamphlets at Montreal's festivals as well as stage other events to maintain momentum until the fall.

Protesters targeted the Formula One Grand Prix in Montreal earlier this month, resulting in violent clashes with police and dozens of arrests.

They also want to maintain the heat in the event that Premier Jean Charest brings truth to the rumours that he is planning to call a provincial election for September.

The students will also continue nightly demonstrations in Montreal although the numbers of people participating in those have dropped significantly in the past few weeks.
