Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

All the posts here were published in the electronic media – main-stream as well as fringe, and maintain links to the original texts.

Something has gone terribly wrong in Canada

Remember when Canada was a great country?

That was a time when Canadians pushed for a fair and just society, our leadership believed likewise and together we created public healthcare, public schools, public pensions and unemployment insurance programs that were envied the world over.

We created peacekeeping and led the world towards a new awareness of conflict resolution.

The common good and the common wealth pushed this great country forward. We paid our taxes knowing that we were supporting not only our social programs but also our brothers and sisters all across Canada in a more equitable manner than any other nation on earth had done.

We created a more caring, healthy and secure society that stood in stark contrast to our mighty southern neighbour.

Today, we are no longer that great country. Why?

A combination of two things seems to have happened to the Canadian people. On the one hand the Canadian people have become more self-centred and careless.

On the other hand the Canadian people fell for the hoax that the economy is the basis to a great country.

What we have today is a public who pays taxes not to support a fair and just society, but to ensure the smooth functioning of capitalism. So that now there is public money for war, for fighter jets and for oil and gas subsidies, but there is not enough to buy school-books for my son. We can afford prisons and pipelines, but not hospital beds or housing for the homeless. Something has gone terribly wrong.

There was a time when our country's greatness was measured, not by its economic wealth, but by how well we treated our weakest citizen. We were better then and we could be again. A fair and just society is the great Canadian country I want my son to live in.
