Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Daily Voice Chairman Promises Good News On Friday, Lays Off Employees The Following Monday

We can probably all agree that "layoffs" and "good news" are two phrases that don't usually go together.

Apparently, executives at one company feel differently.

The Daily Voice, a hyper-local news site, announced the resignation of its CEO Zohar Yardeni Friday. Shortly after the resignation became public, company officials sent an email to the staff to reassure them that good news was around the corner, according to Gawker.

"Monday morning we will share with you the news about where we're going and how we're going to get there," Daily Voice Chairman Carll Tucker wrote in the email. "The news is good-but you'll need to sit tight while we finalize our plans."

Come Monday morning, the Daily Voice shut down all 11 of its Massachusetts websites and laid off at least 11 employees, the MetroWest Daily News reports. The reason for the shutdowns and layoffs was primarily financial, according to the Boston Business Journal.

The Daily Voice and Carll Tucker did not immediately respond to multiple e-mail and phone requests for comment from The Huffington Post.

(Full disclosure: The Daily Voice competes with Patch, a network of hyper-local news sites owned by AOL, The Huffington Post's parent company)

After shutting down all of its local news websites in Massachusetts, the Daily Voice now provides news for 30 communities in New York and 11 in Connecticut, according to its website.
