Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Maritimers will remember EI changes at election time

SUMMERSIDE – When it changed the rules on employment insurance the federal government was messing with a system that has served Maritimers, and the rest of Canada, well for decades – and that’s just not acceptable.

This was the general message interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae brought with him on Saturday as he toured the Summerside Farmers Market.

Rae was on the Island to participate in a forum on EI in Elmsdale, however, he made a couple of photo op stops in town before heading to the meeting.

He told the Journal Pioneer that Maritimers are not likely to forget the changes to the EI system anytime soon.

“What (the Conservative’s) are doing is basically turning what was a system – like our income tax system – which was self-supporting, and turning it into an inquisitorial system where everyone is guilty until proven innocent,” said Rae.

“The Conservatives will pay a very high price for this. Because people won’t forget that they’re being intimidated, that they’re being pushed around and put into a very difficult situation. I think that’s what people will remember for a very very long time.”
