Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Mayor Rob Ford will attend Pride flag-raising, says Doug Ford

Mayor Rob Ford will attend the rainbow flag-raising at City Hall that kicks off Toronto’s Pride Week, his brother, Councillor Doug Ford, told a Ryerson University law class Thursday afternoon.

If he does, it would be the first official Pride event the mayor has attended since his election in 2010.

As he did in a surprise appearance last year, the mayor will also go to the flag-raising at City Hall that marks the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia on May 17, Doug Ford said.

“He’s gonna raise both flags; it’s a done deal,” Ford told the class.

Ford and Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam were guest speakers at a law class titled Law, Business and Politics in the Real World, taught by Ralph Lean, a colourful political fundraiser who has said he’d be willing to help Ford’s next campaign. (Lean backed George Smitherman in the last election.)

“A big round of applause,” said Wong-Tam, council’s only openly gay member, in response to Doug Ford’s declaration.

This is the first I’ve heard of it, she told the Star later. “It’s great news.”

Rob Ford has faced heavy criticism for not attending any of the events during the 10-day Pride festival. He has said he skips the parade because he spends Canada Day weekend with his family at their cottage.

“Rob doesn’t give two hoots if you’re gay, straight, purple, pink, black, white,” Doug Ford told the class. “You call Rob Ford up, he’s calling you back, he’s showing up to your door. It’s very simple.”

The mayor would not publicly confirm that he would attend the two flag-raisings.

“I know what I’m going to be doing tomorrow ... I take one day at a time,” he said at Queen’s Park after his first meeting with Premier Kathleen Wynne.

Ford refused to reveal the details of their meeting, saying they discussed “a whole slew” of issues.
