Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

'You Deserve Rape' Sign Held By 'Brother Dean' Outrages University Of Arizona Students

Dean Saxton, a student at the University of Arizona, stood on campus Tuesday wearing a shirt that said "Virgin Pride" and holding a sign reading "You Deserve Rape."

Saxton, who's known on the UA campus as "Brother Dean," gathered a crowd of onlookers by holding the sign and suggesting women who wear short shorts in 90-degree weather are asking to be raped, the Daily Wildcat reported.

Saxton had other signs, too, which read "Rapists Deserve The Death Penalty," "Frat Boys Are The Rapists" and "Sorority Girls Are Whores," according to a video posted on YouTube.

As seen in the video, Saxton yelled, "You deserve to be raped," at women walking by, insisting their fathers hate them for allowing them to dress in that way. He also shouted, "All Muslims are pedophiles," at one point in the footage.

The video also shows a few men losing their temper and attempting to knock the sign out of Saxton's hands, only to be restrained by others gathered in the crowd. One student held up a sign reading "Nobody Deserves Rape," and another stood in front of Saxton holding a Jimi Hendrix poster, which drew cheers from the crowd. When one woman challenges Saxton, as seen in the video, he replies, "You're disgusting. God's going to vomit you out on Judgment Day," and makes disparaging remarks about her shorts. Eventually campus police pull Saxton aside, but he's allowed to remain on his figurative soapbox.

A number of students complained about Saxton's "sermon" Tuesday, according to the Daily Wildcat:

The Dean of Students Office received stacks of written complaints, emails and multiple phone calls regarding Saxton's sermon about women, said Kendal Washington White, interim dean of students. ... "We find it to be vulgar and vile," White said. "However, it is protected speech. He has yet to, at this point, violate the student code of conduct."

Saxton regularly preaches on the UA campus, according to the Wildcat, often condemning to hell anyone who is gay, as well as anyone who masturbates.

It wasn't clear whether Saxton's diatribe was related to a Take Back The Night anti-rape event that was held Tuesday evening on campus.

Saxton regularly tweets insults about Muslims and feminists. In one tweet from March, he offered "A good question for your first date," with a photo of a shirt reading "Will You Submit To Me?"
