OTTAWA - Statistics Canada says the country had a $3 billion trade deficit in April.
The April deficit was much bigger than the $2.1-billion deficit that economists had estimated, according to Thomson Reuters, but an improvement over the previous month.
Statistics Canada's revised estimate of March trade deficit was $3.9 billion, compared with an initial reading of $3 billion.
Statistics Canada says imports in April fell 2.5 per cent to $44.9 billion on lower imports of consumer goods as well as metal and non-metallic mineral products.
Import volumes fell 1.8 per cent while prices slipped 0.8 per cent.
Meanwhile, exports were down 0.7 per cent at $41.9 billion.
An increase energy exports was offset by declines in consumer goods, forest products and building and packaging materials. Export volumes increased 0.5 per cent, while prices declined 1.2 per cent.
