Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Dickinson on O'Leary's Notley comments: He's the Donald Trump of Canada

Arlene Dickinson says Kevin O'Leary's recent comments on Alberta Premier Rachel Notley — calling for her resignation — are disrespectful to Albertans, who just seven months ago gave Notley a majority government.

Dickinson shot back against her former fellow Dragons' Den investor in an interview with CBC Calgary Wednesday.

O'Leary told a Toronto radio station Monday he would "invest $1 million in Canadian energy companies if, out of grace and for the absolute good of Canada, the premier of Alberta resigns."

Notley responded Tuesday.

"You know, the last time a group of wealthy businessmen tried to tell Alberta voters how to vote, I ended up becoming premier," Notley said.

Dickinson told CBC Calgary O'Leary's comments are in line with his style but of little value.

"That negative criticism is not constructive, it's not helpful in any way and it's really typical of Kevin's bombastic style," said the venture capitalist, television personality and author.

"She did not create the recession, she inherited the recession and she is trying to implement the very platform that we elected her on."

Dickinson says the suggestion that Notley resign was disrespectful to voters in the province.

"Albertans gave Premier Notley a majority government, we voted. Kevin O'Leary didn't vote. Kevin O'Leary didn't have anything to do with it so it is very disrespectful to think that we made a wrong choice," Dickinson said.

"He has become the Donald Trump of Canada."
