Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

All the posts here were published in the electronic media – main-stream as well as fringe, and maintain links to the original texts.

Donald Trump Telling NBC’s Katy Tur to ‘Be Quiet’ Reveals Exactly What Kind of President He’d Be

When was the last time a man told you to be quiet? Bet you can’t remember. One person who could answer this question with incredible accuracy is NBC reporter Katy Tur, who had stomach-dropping experience of being told to “be quiet” by Donald Trump. Because of course he thinks that’s fine.

Tur - who was questioning Trump on his insane suggestion Russia should hack Hillary Clinton’s emails (because who doesn’t need something else disastrous to happen in the current global climate of “oh balls”) - is probably used to the Republican candidate’s lack of charm by now.

According to those on the campaign trail, he has at best referred to the collective press as “eggheads” and at worst banned them from his rallies (apparently he’s got beef with the Washington Post in particular, he REALLY wants them to be quiet).

Yet this latest Trumpism is by far the most significant revealer in terms of showing how he truly feels about women - he’s just wants us all to shut up. Be smiling, pretty, well-dressed fembots who nod serenely, eyes glazed, when he’s preaching racist hate or do be quiet. Women should be seen but not heard. Leave the important stuff to the big, strong, clever men. You are woman - you couldn’t possibly understand. His attitude sanctions the worst tendencies of others.

There’s something about a man telling a woman to be quiet that suggests the inroads we’ve made towards equality could be wiped away in one snappy put down. It reminds us that under the wrong leader things could suddenly become very fragile, start to move backwards, get a bit prehistoric.

Imagine what men like Trump are like in the privacy of their own home. Ivana said he raped her. Then she said “not in the criminal sense”. Oh, well that’s absolutely fine then. A shining example to mankind.

Three words American friends: vote Hillary. Please.
