Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Israel pounds Gaza with massive airstrikes

Israel just carried out a massive daytime airstrike campaign in Gaza — the largest since the 2014 war — with Hamas firing back with rockets on Saturday.

The Associated Press says there are no reports of casualties so far, but Getty Images has already moved photos of bodies being taken into hospital morgues.

Photos also show what appear to be residential areas being struck.

The flare-up is a troubling escalation following the deadly protests at the fence between Gaza and Israel between March and May.

The protests and the killings have not stopped, although they have lessened in intensity.

The Israeli military maintains that it was focusing on military targets, hitting 40 Hamas targets in the past three days.

Thousands of Palestinians on Friday gathered near the Gaza fence for one of their semi-regular protests, when a 15-year-old Palestinian who tried to climb the fence into Israeli territory was shot and killed. A 20-year-old at a protest in southern Gaza was shot on the same day and had died of his wounds by Saturday.

An Israeli officer was also wounded when a grenade was launched at him.

The protests held at the fence — which is not a legal international border — are aimed at highlighting the Israeli-Egyptian blockade in place after Hamas was voted into power in Gaza after being voted into power in 2006.
